Georgia Governor continues to oppose gambling
Despite remaining reluctant at gambling, Gov. Kemp said he won’t block any amendment to let voters decide on the matter.
US.- Georgia voters may soon have their say in regards to legalised gambling as Governor Brian Kemp gave a nod to the segment. Despite opposing the industry, he said he won’t block nor interfere with a potential constitutional amendment to let voters decide on its regulation.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Kemp said: “[I remain] opposed to casino gambling but hardworking Georgians will have the ultimate say if a constitutional amendment is placed on the ballot.”
Recently, gambling advocates decided to push for a broad amendment which would legalise casinos and let lawmakers decide on specifics. The new strategy seems to have worked, as Gov. Kemp apparently loosened his stance on the industry.
A question is set to be asked to voters as separate measures were introduced both in the House and the Senate last week: Should casino gambling be legalised to “preserve the long-term financial stability of the HOPE scholarship” and other education programs?
The governor wouldn’t have to put his signature for casinos to be legalised as the measure is a constitutional amendment. The proposal needs two-thirds support in the Legislature instead and the further approval of a majority of Georgian voters.
It is yet to be known, however, where legislative leaders stand at the moment and whether they’ll support the amendment.
