Gambling participation rate decreases in Germany
A study that details consumption of potentially addictive activities reveals that gambling participation in Germany has decreased.
Germany.- The German Head Office for Addiction Issues (DHS) has released its 2018 Yearbook which provides the latest figures, facts and trends on dependent behaviour. The study revealed that gambling in the European country has decreased 12 per cent in the last eight years.
The participation in any gambling activity has decreased among German players from 87.1 per cent in 2009 to 75.3 per cent in 2017. The 12-month prevalence has stabilised at 37.3 per cent compared to the previous survey. According to current figures, 0.56 per cent of the German population (326k people) have problematic gambling behaviour and 0.31 per cent (180k) a pathological gambling behaviour.
Revenues on the legal German gambling market increased in 2016 by 6.3 per cent to €45.2 billion compared to the previous year. An 8.7 per cent increase in revenues and gross gaming revenues to €29.9 billion was recorded by the 264k commercial slot machines in gambling halls and catering businesses. Since the amendment of the Gaming Ordinance in 2006, the increase in game incentives and the expansion of supply, revenue has increased by 191.5 per cent.
