Dutch gambling regulator names Carol Verheij as new vice chair
The Secretary-Director of the Dutch Safety Board joins the KSA’s new board as it aims to future-proof its structure.
The Netherlands.- Carol Verheij has been named to take office as a new member of the KSA’s Board of Directors. She has been appointed to succeed Bernadette van Buchem as vice chair from March 1.
The State Secretary for Justice and Security announced the appointment in the Dutch Government Gazette.

Verheij has been Secretary-Director of the Dutch Safety Board (ZBO) since March 2016. Prior to that, she was General Director of the screening authority Justis at the Ministry of Justice and Security. She also served as Acting General Director of the Child Protection Council.
She previously held management positions at the Ministries of Economic Affairs, Finance, the Interior and Kingdom Relations, and Infrastructure and Water Management.
She studied Dutch law and European and International Law and began her career in Foreign Economic Relations.
Michel Groothuizen, Chairman of the KSA Board of Directors, said: “With Carol, an experienced public official is joining our Board of Directors. In addition to her role as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors, she will focus primarily on issues related to legal frameworks, governance, integrity and compliance.
“These are topics that are constantly evolving within the KSA’s dynamic field. With her appointment, the Netherlands Gambling Authority is further developing a future-proof organisational structure that optimally supports its ambitions and strategy.”
Verheij said: “I’m incredibly excited to dedicate my energy, knowledge, and experience to the Netherlands Gambling Authority. The Netherlands Gambling Authority has an important societal responsibility: ensuring that people, especially young people, can gamble safely.
“Online gambling, which is inherently cross-border, has added an unprecedented dimension to this challenge. Together with my colleagues at the Netherlands Gambling Authority and all other partners, I will make a positive impact on the reliability and security of the gambling market.
As of this year, the KSA’s Board of Directors will consist of three members: a full-time chair and two part-time directors. Together, they will provide direction for the organisation, serve as the external figurehead, and maintain administrative contacts with the department, (international) partners, market players, and other stakeholders.
