Two Malaysian police officers remanded over bribe linked to gambling protection
The officers are suspected of protecting illegal gambling operations.
Malaysia.- Two police officers from Johor have been remanded for seven days as part of an ongoing investigation into a bribery case. The officers were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
According to the MACC, the officers are suspected of soliciting and receiving bribes from in exchange for not taking enforcement action against illegal gambling. The Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court approved the remand request, extending the officers’ detention until August 5.
The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of no less than five times the amount of the bribe, which is alleged to be around MYR635,000 (US$150,000).
