Malaysian police dismantle alleged online gambling operation in Kuala Lumpur
Thirteen suspects have been arrested.
Malaysia.- Police have made 13 arrests in a raid on a call centre for an alleged illegal online gambling operation in Kuala Lumpur. The facility, located on the 23rd floor of a commercial building on Jalan Kia Peng, was uncovered during an Op Dadu operation led by the Kuala Lumpur Vice, Gambling and Corrupt Practices Crime Investigation Division (D7) in cooperation with the Dang Wangi district police.
Those detained comprise eight Malaysian men, three Malaysian women and two Chinese nationals. According to Acting Kuala Lumpur Police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, the syndicate had been operating since early April and was targeting the Indonesian market. Workers were reportedly paid between MYR3,000 and MYR4,000 (US$640–850) per month to promote the gambling platform.
The police seized 14 desktop computers, two laptops, Wi-Fi routers, modems and an attendance machine. Authorities said the premises were arranged to mimic a standard business office. All suspects are being investigated under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. The foreign nationals also face charges under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
