Malaysia to step up monitoring of illegal gambling during 2026 World Cup
Authorities will increase oversight of websites, social media platforms and online services during the tournament, citing concerns over a rise in illegal betting.
Malaysia.- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has said it will strengthen its monitoring efforts during the 2026 FIFA World Cup with closer oversight of websites, social media platforms and online services between June 11 and July 19. The regulator is working alongside the Royal Malaysia Police, which leads enforcement of the country’s gambling laws.
It will continue existing measures including restricting access to identified illegal gambling websites, removing unlawful content from digital platforms and monitoring public complaints.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said, “MCMC will take action, and any member of the public who comes across any links or content related to online gambling is encouraged to submit their reports for further action.”
The MCMC added that it continues to work with digital platforms and service providers to improve responses to regulatory requests and strengthen moderation of illegal gambling-related content.
