Macau casino operators pledge US$5m for Tibet mudslide relief
The donations are intended to support emergency response and reconstruction efforts after the disaster.
Macau.- The six casino concessionaires in Macau and the Lui Che Woo Family Charitable Foundation have pledged a combined MOP40m (US$5m) to support relief and recovery efforts following the deadly mudslide in Gyirong County, Xigaze city, Tibet. The donation, made with the assistance of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau SAR, is intended to fund search-and-rescue operations, relief supplies, medical assistance, temporary accommodation and longer-term reconstruction.
Galaxy Entertainment Group and the foundation jointly pledged MOP10m, while Sands China also committed MOP10m. Melco Resorts & Entertainment, MGM China, SJM Resorts and Wynn Macau each pledged MOP5m.
Galaxy Entertainment chairman Francis Lui said the company hoped its contribution would provide “timely and meaningful assistance”, while Sands China executive vice chairman Wilfred Wong said the donation would “provide immediate assistance to those impacted”.
Executives from Melco, MGM China, SJM Resorts and Wynn Macau also support for the affected communities. MGM China chairperson Pansy Ho said she was confident residents would “gradually rebuild their lives and livelihoods”.
The mudslide struck the area around Gyirong Port on August 26 after a high-altitude glacier collapse and ice-rock avalanche on the Nepalese side of the border. The disaster caused severe casualties on both sides, with hundreds of people still missing. The Macau government donated CNY30m (US$4.5m) to Tibet in late August to support rescue and recovery efforts.
