HKJC grants US$4.16m to Asian Games medallists

Cash incentives were awarded to athletes who won medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Hong Kong.- The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) has given cash prizes to Hong Kong athletes that won medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Hong Kong China’s Asian Games Medallists Celebration Raceday took place at the Sha Tin Racecourse on October 22.

The Hong Kong team won 53 medals, breaking its previous records. Through the Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme (JCAIAS), the HKJC awarded HK$32.5m (US$4.16m) in prizes to 80 medallists representing 18 sports disciplines. Attendees included government officials, national sports associations’ representatives, and Chan Kwok-ki, the chief secretary for the administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Sixteen athletes from the fencing team won nine medals and received cash incentives of HK$4.5m. Five athletes from the rowing team were presented with cash incentives of HK$3.25m. Rowers Lam San-tung and Wong Wai-chun, who won the gold medal in the men’s pair event, said: “We have worked extremely hard to prepare for the Asian Games. Bringing home the first gold medal at this Asian Games is incredibly exciting. Our effort has paid off and we hope to keep bringing honour to Hong Kong.”

The JCAIAS provides cash incentives to athletes achieving distinction for Hong Kong through gold, silver, or bronze medals in the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, Asian Para Games, National Games, National Para Games, and FISU World University Games.

At the Hangzhou Asian Games, the HKJC provided technical support for the equestrian events in six functional areas and fully supported the Hong Kong, China Equestrian Team, all members of the HKJC Equestrian Team.
