Uganda Motorsport federation goes virtual with first esports championship

FMU launches its inaugural Esports Championship series, bringing virtual rally racing to the forefront of Uganda’s motorsport scene.

Uganda.- The Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) has officially launched its inaugural Esports Championship Series, a ground-breaking move that brings digital racing to the forefront of Ugandan motorsport.

FMU General Secretary Reynold Kibira said: “As a Federation, we are quite excited to be launching the Esport Championship, and this is historical. This is an opportunity to grow our sport and have different sport disciplines for expansion and growth.”

The championship kicked off on August 30 at The Fun Station, a leading gaming and entertainment venue in the city of Kampala. Participants competed virtually using the World Rally Championship (WRC) Generations game, the official rally racing simulator.

Isaac Katende dominated the event, winning five of six stages and completing the rally in 27 minutes and 20 seconds. Umar Dauda finished in second place, while Shafiq Matovu took third.

FMU Esport Coordinator Leon Ssenyange highlighted the initiative’s role in “growing the sport and attracting young fans” and said that the championship will continue through the end of 2025, with a full series scheduled for 2026.

The launch reflects FMU’s partnership with The Fun Station and its affiliation with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motorsport. By supporting esports alongside traditional competitions, FMU is opening new pathways for participation, talent development and fan engagement.

The FMU Esports Championship Series is building momentum, with the inaugural round hailed as a huge success and the second round scheduled for the first week of October 2025. FMU emphasised that these rounds pave the way for a full championship in 2026, aimed at growing Uganda’s digital motorsport scene and showcasing emerging talent.
