SportPesa re‑launches boxing sponsorship in Kenya
The betting firm wants to develop fighters from the grassroots level and host more events next year.
Kenya.- Betting operator SportPesa has staged a comeback in Kenyan boxing sponsorship after a break since 2019. The company marked its renewed promotional push in the sport with a professional boxing event on November 29 at The Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi. The event, organised in partnership with Ultra Fighting Series (UFS BXNG), featured eight bouts with fighters from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Sweden.
Kenyan boxer Consolata Musanga won the main event, clinching the Pugilistic Syndicate of Tanzania (PST) Super‑Bantamweight women’s title with a unanimous decision over Sweden’s Sandra Attermo.
In another key bout, Kenya’s Javan Buyu defended his national lightweight title by stopping compatriot Abdul Hakim in a six‑round rematch within three rounds. Richard Okoth from Kenya knocked out Uganda’s Bruno Muweezi in the third round of their welterweight contest. Other results included Tanzania’s Leila Yazidu earning a points win over Uganda’s Marion Akankunda in super‑featherweight, and Kevin Gachee winning his professional debut with a knockout in a middleweight fight. Gachee used the bout to highlight men’s mental‑health issues.
In his speech at the event, SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri said the company is fully back in supporting boxing. He added that the firm wants to develop fighters from the grassroots level and host more events next year, positioning Kenyan fighters for world‑class belts like the WBC.
Jason Gibson, SportPesa’s Chief Commercial Officer, described the sponsorship as a way to give talented athletes a platform. He said: “Supporting sport is about more than just competition, it’s about giving exceptional talent a platform to showcase their skills and get noticed.”
