Ruben Gooranah to retire after 38 Years with Sun International
Gooranah plans to spend time with family and pursue personal interests, including travel and golf.
South Africa.- Ruben Gooranah, Complex General Manager of Time Square Casino, is set to retire at the end of April 2026 after a 38-year career with Sun International. His departure closes one of the longest tenures in the South African casino and hospitality industry.
Gooranah joined Sun International in October 1988 as a count clerk at Venda Sun, beginning his career in the finance department before moving into casino operations. A decade later, he transitioned fully into gaming and became a slots manager in 1998, a role that marked the start of his leadership track within the group’s casino division.
Over nearly four decades, he held operational and management roles across multiple casino properties in South Africa. These included senior positions at Grand West Casino and Thaba’Nchu Sun, as well as serving as general manager of Morula Sun Casino and Hotel. His responsibilities covered several provinces, including Limpopo, the Eastern Cape, the North West, the Free State and the Western Cape.
Beyond property-level management, Gooranah also played a key role in upgrading the group’s gaming systems. In 2010, he led the Enterprise Gaming System project as Business Manager for gaming at Sun International’s central office. In this capacity, he oversaw the national rollout of the Bally Enterprise Gaming System across the company’s casino operations, a project aimed at modernising slot management and operational monitoring across its gaming floor network.
His responsibilities expanded further in 2013 when he was promoted to Regional General Manager for Casinos. In that position, he oversaw several Sun International gaming properties and served as an Executive Director on multiple casino boards within the group. Since 2020, Gooranah has served as Complex General Manager at Time Square Casino in Pretoria, one of the group’s major entertainment and gaming venues.
Sun International acknowledged Gooranah’s contribution to the organisation’s gaming operations and leadership pipeline, noting his role in developing casino teams and managing large-scale gaming infrastructure during his tenure.
Following his retirement, Gooranah plans to spend time with family and pursue personal interests, including travel and golf. His exit marks a key leadership transition for the group as it navigates the evolving South African casino landscape.
