Casino veteran Mark Sergeant takes the helm as COO: Gaming at Sun International
UK casino industry veteran with 25 years’ experience to lead Sun International’s land-based casinos in South Africa.
South Africa.- Sun International, one of South Africa’s leading gaming and hospitality groups, has appointed Mark Sergeant as Chief Operating Officer: Gaming, a strategic move designed to accelerate growth and strengthen operational performance across its land-based casino portfolio.
Ulrik Bengtsson, CEO of Sun International, said: “After a thorough search, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Sergeant as Chief Operating Officer: Gaming. As such, Mark is responsible for the land-based gaming revenue across the group’s portfolio.”
Effective February 1, 2026, Sergeant will report directly to Bengtsson and take the reins of Sun International’s land-based gaming operations, overseeing revenue growth, operational efficiency and customer experience throughout the group’s flagship casinos.
Bringing UK experience to SA
Sergeant brings more than 25 years of senior leadership experience in gaming, leisure and hospitality, including leading two of the UK’s largest casino groups. Most notably, he served as Group Managing Director of Genting Casinos UK, managing 35 casinos, international operations, integrated leisure resorts and online gaming businesses.
Renowned for managing complex, large-scale operations, Sergeant is credited with driving sustainable growth, boosting profitability and delivering multi-channel gaming experiences at scale.
Beyond operational performance, he is recognised as a people-first leader, having built high-performing teams, nurtured future leaders and championed Responsible Gaming to uphold the highest standards of integrity, compliance and customer care.
