Michael Owen’s star power shines at Sibaya Casino and Durban July
Former football icon Michael Owen brought international attention to Sibaya Casino and the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
South Africa.- Sibaya Casino played host to England football legend Michael Owen as he kicked off his South African weekend with a surprise visit before making his way to experience the electric atmosphere of the Hollywoodbets Durban July, an event he said he thoroughly enjoyed.
Owen arrived at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom for a media event and fan meet and greet, much to the delight of guests. The charismatic SunBet ambassador chatted about his football career and his growing involvement in horse racing.
After dazzling fans at Sibaya, Owen made his way to the Durban July, where fast horses, a strong economic boost and fashion came together in a spectacular South African showcase.
The former Ballon d’Or winner, now a passionate racehorse owner and breeder, brought international flair and star power to the festivities.
Real Prince triumphs at Durban July in thrilling finish
With over 50,000 spectators in attendance and an estimated R700 million ($37m) added to the local economy, the event was more than just a race, it was a celebration of culture and sport.
On the turf, it was the Real Prince who stole the spotlight. Ridden by Craig Zackey and trained by Dean Kannemeyer, the bay colt edged out hot favourite Eight On Eighteen in a nail-biting finish, with Selukwe placing third and Royal Victory fourth.
“The Real Prince’s full brother Gimme a Prince was crowned Champion Sprinter two seasons back. So there was always a question mark hanging over his ability to stay the 2,200m trip of the July. That was answered in no uncertain manner,” said Hollywoodbets, according to IOL.
Betting activity hit historic highs, with tote pools including a R20m ($1m) jackpot and a R15m ($800,000) Pick 6 carryover, making it one of the most lucrative editions in the race’s history.
Owen, now at the reins of the Michael Owen Racing Club, had nothing but high praise for the Durban July and said he was excited to have experienced South Africa’s premier horse racing event.
“It’s fantastic to be here in South Africa. I’m incredibly proud to blend my two sporting passions,” he said.
Owen’s weekend proved he’s no stranger to making big plays whether on the football pitch or at the Durban July. With the race delivering thrilling finishes, record-breaking betting and a cultural spectacle to match, Owen’s growing passion for South African racing might just be his next big victory.
