Malawi rises as an emerging gaming market in 2025
Malawi’s gaming ecosystem shows steady growth in hardware and software, supported by e-sports initiatives.
Malawi.- Malawi is steadily emerging on Africa’s gaming map, presenting new opportunities for developers, investors and gamers alike. While the country’s gaming ecosystem remains in its early stages, growth is evident, driven by rising adoption of hardware and a growing interest in video games.
A Statista Market Insights report for Gaming Equipment for Malawi 2025‑2030 stated that revenue in the Gaming Equipment market in Malawi amounts to $838,870, covering consoles, PCs and gaming accessories. The market is projected to grow at 1.73 per cent annually (CAGR 2025‑2030). Meanwhile, the video game software and content sector, though smaller, is expected to reach $19,980 in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.5 per cent.
The report states: “User penetration is expected to rise from 2.5per cent in 2025 to 3.0 per cent by 2030, highlighting a gradually expanding base of gamers in the country. The total number of gaming devices is projected to reach 2,470 units by 2030, while average gaming revenue per person is estimated at MWK 0.04 ($0.04) in 2025.”
Early-stage growth in African gaming
National-level initiatives are being led by the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA). These include esports tournaments, gaming workshops and programs promoting responsible gaming, aimed at supporting the growth of the gaming ecosystem while ensuring fair play and protection for minors.
Malawi is emerging as one of several African markets showing early-stage growth in the gaming sector. Other under-reported markets, such as Niger and Lesotho, also demonstrate low hardware and software adoption but a rising interest in gaming among young populations. These countries, like Malawi, present opportunities for mobile gaming and local content development due to limited infrastructure and nascent regulatory oversight.
The combined picture indicates that Malawi is an emerging market with steady growth in both hardware and software, supported by regulatory initiatives and grassroots gaming activity. While the ecosystem is still small, the projected growth rates and increasing user penetration suggest that Malawi could play a more visible role in Africa’s gaming landscape in the coming years.
