Malawi clamps down on responsible gambling rules, trains operators
The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority spearheads campaign to protect players as industry operators undergo vital responsible gambling training.
Malawi.- The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) is doubling down on its mission to clean up the country’s gaming landscape, training operators in a campaign to enforce responsible gambling.
In a firm declaration made at the launch of the two-day workshop in Salima last week, MAGLA Board Chairperson Frederick Changaya announced the regulator’s commitment to ensuring that all operators toe the line when it comes to responsible gaming.
“This training workshop is designed to ensure that operators understand their responsibility as they operate various gaming and betting activities,” said Changaya, according to Malawi24.com.
“We have done well as an authority, and this is not the first training workshop we have had with them.”
Training focuses on key issues
The workshop was held jointly with the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF). It focused on spotting the red flags of addiction, understanding problem gambling, and curbing its impact.
The move is timely in Malawi, where gambling was once seen as pure entertainment, and is now increasingly being used as an alternative income source. MAGLA’s efforts aim to shift that narrative and bring the fun back to betting – safely and sustainably.
Changaya noted that MAGLA isn’t acting alone. He said regular engagement with stakeholders was part of the bigger game plan to make sure both operators and punters are armed with the right knowledge they need to navigate risks.
