Botswana Gambling Authority launches workshop in Letlhakane
The regulator cited the contributions of Thakadu Casino, the only casino hotel in the area, to local economic development and job creation.
Botswana.- The Gambling Authority, in partnership with the Levy Fund Committee and Innolead Consultancy, has launched a three-day workshop in Letlhakane to develop strategies for job creation, economic growth and strengthening the value chain within Botswana’s gambling industry.
As part of the programme, Authority officials conducted a public engagement session with residents of Letlhakane at Teemane Mall, where they shared information on responsible gambling. They also conducted mobile screenings to help identify individuals who may be at risk of problem gambling.
The Gambling Authority also held a meeting with Letlhakane’s leaders to strengthen ties and share insights on the impact of the rapidly growing gambling industry. The regulator cited the contributions of Thakadu Casino, the only casino hotel in the area, to local economic development and job creation.
A statement from the Authority read: “Letlhakane is already reaping the benefits of this industry through Thakadu Casino, which has created meaningful employment opportunities for local youth and residents. Many Batswanas have secured permanent positions at the establishment, contributing to the economic development of the area.”
The Authority continues to reiterate its commitment to responsible gambling practices, through initiatives like Gambling o Phepa, which ensures that the industry’s expansion is both sustainable and advantageous to local communities.
The workshop is part of a broader strategy to ensure the gambling industry’s expansion is socially responsible and economically beneficial. It combines stakeholder consultations with public education to encourage sustainable growth within the sector.
This development comes days after the Gambling Authority signed an MOU with the Lotteries Board of Namibia to collaborate on regulatory policies, training programs and research initiatives in a bid to improve regional gaming oversight and promote responsible gaming practices.
