Botswana and Namibia strengthen gaming ties with MOU

By setting a precedent for responsible gaming governance and cross-border cooperation, the two countries cement their positions as leaders in gaming integrity and player protection in Africa.

Botswana.- A high-level bilateral meeting between the Botswana Gambling Authority and the Lotteries Board of Namibia has culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the two parties. The collaboration marks a major step forward in aligning gaming regulations between Botswana and Namibia and the entire Southern African region.

The engagement, which was held in Gaborone from July 23 to 24, 2025, brought together key officials from the gaming regulatory bodies of both countries. The host’s delegation was led by Gaoakanye Tapeng, Botswana Gaming Authority Board Member, and CEO Peter Emolemo Kesitilwe, while Chairperson Wycliff Shililifa and CEO Dr. John Shimaneni represented the Lotteries Board of Namibia.

During the two-day visit, the delegations engaged in a series of activities, including site inspections and policy presentations. They also held strategic discussions on areas of collaboration within the gaming sector, covering key topics like regulatory policy, responsible gambling and emerging trends.

The MOU formalises both parties’ commitment to working together on knowledge exchange, research and coordinated initiatives aimed at protecting players and maintaining the integrity of the gaming sector.

The agreement will see the two regulators implement joint staff training programs, which will help establish best practices and drive improvements in player protection.
