Gambling Authority hosts session to combat gender-based violence in Botswana

The GBV awareness session aligns with nationwide efforts by government ministries, civil society organisations and international partners.

Botswana.- The Botswana Gambling Authority (BGA) has reaffirmed its commitment to combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) by hosting a high-level awareness session aimed at shifting organisational mindsets from passive awareness to proactive action.

The event, held on Thursday, January 15, at the Authority’s training facility in Gaborone, was officially opened by the acting CEO, Moruntshi Kemorwale, who emphasised the need for all sectors, including regulatory bodies, to play an active role in reducing gender-related harm.

Kemorwale, who also leads responsible gambling and corporate affairs at the Authority, has been instrumental in embedding social and ethical priorities within the organisation’s mandate.

Central to the session was a keynote address by Lorato Moalusi, CEO of the Botswana Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Support Centre (BGBVC). She highlighted the pervasive nature of GBV, citing statistics showing that a significant proportion of women in Botswana experience abuse in their lifetime, and stressed the urgency of cross-sectoral action.

The dialogue fostered interactive discussions on workplace safety, support systems for survivors and the broader legal and social frameworks being developed to address GBV in Botswana. Closing remarks were delivered by Tshepang Magang, acting CFO of the Authority, who lauded the organisation’s efforts as part of a shared national initiative.

The Gambling Authority has been expanding its social engagement beyond regulatory duties, notably through responsible gambling campaigns and staff training on harassment and respectful workplaces. Recent internal workshops have focused on identifying harassment, encouraging respectful conduct, and equipping employees with the tools to create supportive environments.

The GBV awareness session aligns with nationwide efforts by government ministries, civil society organisations and international partners to enhance capacity, support survivors and reinforce preventative strategies. By embedding GBV prevention into institutional culture, the Gambling Authority is fostering safer workplaces and setting a standard for ethical conduct across the sector.
