Botswana gambling industry set to generate more than P1bn in new financial year, driving revenue growth

Strong growth projections highlight the sector’s positive impact on investment and government revenue while prioritising responsible gambling.

Botswana.- Botswana’s gaming and gambling industry is projected to deliver strong revenue growth exceeding P1bn (€78m) in the next financial year, highlighting the sector’s growing significance to the economy by attracting investment and providing additional income for the government.

The projection was revealed by Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship Tiroeaone Ntsima during the launch of the Motshameko o Phepa (Responsible Play) campaign. “Globally gambling generates US$500bn yearly, while in Botswana an average of P250m (€19.5m) is generated annually. Projections indicate this could surpass P1bn (€78m) in the next financial year,” said Ntsima, according to the Ngami Times.

Responsible gambling drives growth

Alongside strong growth prospects, the government and Gambling Authority are emphasising responsible gambling, showing that industry expansion can go hand-in-hand with protecting players and communities.

Ntsima said: “Gambling Authority is not only to regulate but to protect families, safeguard youths and strengthen our communities. Gambling must never compromise the wellbeing of our people,” he said.

Highlighting the campaign’s relevance to national goals, he added: “Motshameko o Phepa is timely and speaks to the aspirations of Vision 2036.”

The Motshameko o Phepa campaign, spearheaded by the Gambling Authority, is a public education initiative designed to reach over 500 sites across Botswana. Launched in September in Francistown, the campaign will run until March next year, demonstrating the government’s commitment to building a gambling industry that is safe, well-regulated and aligned with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

To further amplify the campaign, the Gambling Authority unveiled its brand ambassador, world-class athlete Nijel Amos, along with a team of social media influencers, reinforcing the industry’s positive public image and community engagement.
