Africa leads global gaming growth, outpacing the industry by six times

Local content and a young population are driving Africa’s gaming scene to lead global growth, powered by smartphones and rising esports.

Nigeria.- Africa’s gaming industry is in overdrive, growing at a rate six times higher than the global average of two per cent a year. The sector is expanding at an impressive 12 per cent annually, outpacing global growth and capturing the attention of investors, developers and digital platforms.

A report by African data firm Stears shows that the continent is on the move, where a mix of mobile access, urban connectivity and a young, tech-savvy population is reshaping how entertainment is consumed and created.

Nigeria and South Africa are currently leading the charge, generating a combined $578m in gaming revenue. One of the main reasons cited for this is better connectivity and enhanced gaming content, according to the report.

“Smartphone-native users, improved urban connectivity, and culturally relevant gaming content are accelerating user engagement across the region. These shifts are not only increasing player numbers but also expanding the types of games gaining popularity,” the report stated, according to Business Day.

These new games range from casual mobile titles to home-grown, story-rich games steeped in African folklore and everyday life. Over 60 per cent of people in Africa are under 25. They want games that use local languages and tell familiar stories. Developers are making games that reflect African culture and these games stand out in a market often filled with foreign titles.

Smartphones beat consoles in gaming boom

One of the most striking trends is the role of smartphones. In much of Africa, mobile devices have replaced traditional consoles or gaming PCs.

With consoles priced out of reach for many, smartphones have become the continent’s gaming lifeline. Affordable, widely available and internet-enabled, they are now the primary access point for gaming, particularly among Africa’s massive youth population.

The growth isn’t just in casual games. Competitive gaming is growing fast. Esports events and live streams are pulling in big audiences. Betting sites connected to gaming are also expanding, creating jobs and bringing in money in major countries.

Africa isn’t just playing catch-up. It is rewriting the rules with games rooted in local stories, languages and culture. With young gamers and smartphones leading the charge, the continent’s rise is only beginning to unfold.
