Wyoming lawmakers propose gambling tax increases
Online sports betting taxes would increase from 10 to 20 per cent.
US.- The Wyoming Legislature’s Select Committee on Capital Financing and Investments has proposed a series of tax hikes on gambling. It proposes increasing tax on online sports betting from 10 to 20 per cent, the tax on skill-based games from 20 to 25 per cent and the rate on historical horseracing from 1.5 to 2.5 per cent.
Committee chair Tara Nethercott said: “I think the state of Wyoming has been quite generous to the players in this space, giving them almost exclusive access to the market, in a proliferated rate, having infiltrated every block of all our communities.”
She added: “As the industry has grown exponentially in recent years, Wyoming needs to establish enhanced oversight and revenues to match the growing needs from impacts in our communities.”
The Wyoming Gaming Commission issued a warning to the public regarding illegal online gaming websites and apps in the state. The agency stressed that, while online sports betting and fantasy sports are allowed in Wyoming, online casino games like slots, blackjack, and roulette for real money are not allowed.
Illinois passes state budget with new sports betting fees
Illinois lawmakers recently passed the state’s budget proposal, including new fees for the taxation of sports wagering. Sportsbooks in Illinois will be charged $0.25 for each of the first 20,000 online bets they take annually. Beyond that threshold, the fee doubles to $0.50 per bet. The new fee is expected to bring in $36m annually to the state.
