Wisconsin governor signs online sports betting bill into law
Assembly Bill 601 will allow tribes to offer online sports betting by partnering with sportsbook operators.
US.- Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has signed a bill that will legalise online sports betting in the state. Assembly Bill 601 will allow Wisconsin’s 11 tribes to partner with sportsbook operators to offer betting via mobile devices anywhere in the state, as long as the server processing the bet is on tribal land.
The bill passed the state Senate by a 21-12 vote in March after being approved by the state Assembly in February.
Governor Evers said there was still work to be done to iron out the proposed framework. He said: “This legislation is the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one. The real work begins today. Each of the 11 Tribes must now work diligently-and together-to shape the future of sports betting in Wisconsin.
“What I will not accept is a plan that fractures this opportunity into unequal pieces, allowing some Tribes to reap great benefits while leaving only crumbs for others. An approach that exacerbates long-standing inequalities among Tribal Nations is not good for Wisconsinites or Wisconsin. I will not entertain it as governor.”
