Anders Dorph: “GREF’s primary purpose is to strengthen collaboration and dialogue among European gambling regulators”

Anders Dorph, Director of the Danish Gambling Authority, has been appointed as the Chair of the Gambling Regulators’ European Forum (GREF). In an exclusive interview with Focus Gaming News, Dorph discusses his main objectives as GREF chair, emphasising the importance of collaboration and dialogue among European regulators. He addresses challenges such as combating illegal operators and cross-border regulation, while also analysing Denmark’s market performance. Dorph highlights key trends in the European gambling industry, including stricter licensing frameworks and increased focus on responsible gambling. He also discusses the growth of online casino revenue in Denmark and the shift towards digital gambling in Europe. The closure of state-owned land-based casinos in Sweden is seen as part of a broader shift towards digital gambling. Denmark’s approach to balancing land-based and online offerings is driven by societal changes, with a focus on fair regulation and monitoring market developments.

California bill proposes ban on online sweepstakes gaming

Avelino Valencia, a California assemblymember, has introduced Assembly Bill (AB) 831 to ban online sweepstakes games in the state, with support from the California Nations Indian Gaming Association. The bill aims to protect Californians from unregulated online gambling that mimics casino-style wagering. Co-sponsored by tribal groups, the legislation strengthens the framework for fair and accountable gaming in California. Tribal leaders emphasise the importance of upholding voter-approved laws and protecting communities from the risks posed by illegal online gaming. The CNIGA chairman highlights the economic contributions of tribal gaming and the threats posed by unregulated online platforms. Montana has already banned online sweepstakes casinos, with other states following suit. The proposed legislation in California seeks to safeguard the integrity of the gaming system and protect consumers from potential harm.

Denmark’s state-owned gambling operator sees revenue rise in Q1

The article reports on the financial performance of Danish gambling operator Danske Spil in the first quarter of 2025. The company saw a 2.5 per cent increase in gross gaming revenue, with the lottery business experiencing the highest growth. Online gambling and sports betting also saw modest increases, while land-based slots operations declined. Despite the rise in revenue, net income was down due to a one-off financial gain in the previous year. Danske Spil emphasised responsible gambling through its “Play with Care” campaign. Additionally, the Danish gambling market as a whole saw a significant increase in revenue, driven by online casino and sports betting. Online casino revenue reached its highest level, with slots being the most popular game. Land-based gaming, however, experienced a decline in revenue from slot machines but saw improvement in casino revenue.

Senator Vin Gopal: “There is tremendous potential in New Jersey’s gaming market”

Senator Vin Gopal proposed a bill to allow casino gaming at Monmouth Park and Meadowlands racetracks in New Jersey, expanding beyond Atlantic City. The amendment aims to boost the state’s economy and put the horse racing industry on par with neighbouring states. Tax revenue from the new casino games would fund property tax reductions, special education aid, pension systems, and more. The proposal, subject to voter approval, has received limited but positive feedback. Gopal believes the state’s gaming market, which reported record revenue in 2024, has great potential that can be further realised with this expansion. Discussions with stakeholders will continue as the legislation progresses.

Casinos in Azerbaijan set to be legalised

The article discusses a proposed legislation in Azerbaijan to legalise casinos on artificial islands in the Caspian Sea, overturning a ban in place for over 25 years. The move aims to boost the economy, with an annual license fee of AZN340,000 for operators. Singer Emin Agalarov is interested in opening a casino at his Sea Breeze resort. Supporters highlight the economic benefits, citing revenue from neighbouring countries. However, there is opposition from conservative religious groups and concerns about gambling harm. Azerbaijan’s history with casinos includes a ban in 1998 due to moral reasons. Reintroducing casinos would require amendments to various laws. Overall, the potential legalisation of casinos in Azerbaijan is a controversial topic with both supporters and opponents.
