Virginia discusses casino project
The executives that proposed a casino in Bristol, Virginia, discussed the chances of approval.
US.- Jim McGlothlin, the executive who proposed the Bristol Resort and Casino, talked about the project’s odds of approval by the Virginia General Assembly. He wants to redevelop the Bristol Mall into a US$250 million resort-casino.
“I’m hearing three different things. It’s either positive, I’m not going to stand in your way or I’m just not ready to commit. I’ve heard almost no nos. I know they’re out there, but nobody has said to me they’re not voting for it,” McGlothlin said after the meeting.
The proposal was introduced two weeks ago by state Senator Bill Carrico, who announced plans for a legislation that would have the General Assembly approve a casino for Bristol if it gets the thumbs up by voters in a referendum.
“It’s [gambling] inevitable. The question is, ‘Do we do it after the game is already over?’ You can’t play the game if it’s already done, and it’s done if they build anything within 50 or 60 miles of here,” McGlothlin said. “I’m 78. I’m not going to do this when I’m 85. So they’re either going to do it this year, or we’re not going to do it.”
