NYC Planning Commission approves land use application for Coney Island casino project
The application now heads to the New York City Council.
US.- The New York City Planning Commission has voted to approve a land use application for a casino and entertainment complex in Coney Island. The application now heads to the New York City Council for a public hearing and final vote. If approved, the proposal, from Saratoga Holdings, Global Gaming Solutions of the Chickasaw Nation, Legends and Thor Equities, would still need to win one of three planned downstate New York gaming licences.
The Coney would have a 500-room hotel and a 2,500-seat concert venue. Most commissioners voted in favour of the land use application, but Juan Camilo Osorio opposed it, saying the plan failed to meet several recommendations from the Brooklyn borough president, including the sky bridge design, insufficient public amenities and street improvement plans that don’t fully address flood risk.
There are 11 known contenders for the three downstate New York casino licences. MGM Resorts International, Wynn Resorts, Las Vegas Sands and Caesars Entertainment are among the operators to have set out initial plans. The state Gaming Commission is expected to make licence decisions by the end of 2025.
