Sports betting to expand in New Jersey

Freehold Raceway’s operator is looking to become the third horse racing track to offer sports betting in the state.

US.- Sports betting just keeps growing ever since the Supreme Court of the United States struck PASPA down and New Jersey might soon have a new operator. Freehold Raceway has already received a licence from the state Racing Commission and is now looking for a partner to run a sportsbook.

“It’s a good market, and Freehold’s location and demographics bode well for us,” said Chris McErlean, a vice president with Penn National Gaming, which co-owns the track in a joint venture with Greenwood Racing. “We are anxious to get in the game,” he added.

The racetrack still needs to get approval from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), which is why they haven’t set a date to start operating. It would be the third racetrack to get in the business after the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park, while two other former racetrack sites haven’t pushed to operate yet.

“We’ve been trying to take a measured approach,” McErlean said. “There was a big rush at the beginning with a lot of locations to get up and running. It’s going to be a long-term thing.”
