South Dakota Senate passes amendment to allow sports betting vote
The proposal will now pass the South Dakota House of Representatives.
US.- South Dakota’s Senate has passed Joint Resolution 502 for a constitutional amendment that would allow residents to vote on the legalisation of online sports betting at the November 2022 election. It was a close call, with the vote going 18-17 in favour.
The Senate Commerce and Energy committee of South Dakota advanced SJR 502 last week. It will now go before the South Dakota House. If the motion is approved in the House, and South Dakota voters say yes to online sports betting on the November ballot, residents would be able to wager on sporting events through an app or electronic platform anywhere in the state from mid-2023.
Currently, the city of Deadwood is the only territory in the state which offers legal gambling. Sports betting has been allowed in Deadwood since 2020, but in order to place their bets, players have to be physically at a Deadwood casino.
