Massachusetts Lottery sales higher than last year
Last month, Massachusetts Lottery outpassed previous year’s figures by $34m.
US.- Massachusetts Lottery reported $455.4m in sales last month as nearly all product types posted increases over September 2020. The Lottery sales and estimated profit were each up about $34m compared to the same period last year.
Executive Director, Michael Sweeney, told the Lottery Commission that three months into the fiscal year, sales are up $97.7m or 6.6 per cent over the same period last year.
Sweeney attributed the boost to a $16.4m increase in Keno sales with more bars and restaurants open, and to a combined $19.6m increase in Mega Millions and Powerball sales fueled by larger jackpots.
The $34m rise in profit puts the Lottery $6.6m ahead of its three-month profit total from fiscal 2021, a year in which the Lottery set records with an estimated profit of $1.112bn from $5.827bn in revenue.
The only three Lottery product types that saw sales dip from September 2020 to September 2021 were: Instant tickets, Mass Cash and Megabucks Doubler. Scratch tickets, which typically account for more than two-thirds of the Lottery’s business, were down $3.4m or 1.1 per cent last month and are down $8m or 0.8 per cent so far this year with the lucrative holiday season upcoming.
The lottery’s net profit goes towards aid for 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts.
