Sam’s Town Hotel and Gaming Hall in Mississippi to close

The resort located in Tunica will permanently close its doors on November 9.

US.- Sam’s Town Hotel and Gaming Hall in Tunica, Mississippi, will permanently close on November 9 after more than 30 years. Its hotel will close on November 2.

In a statement to The Commercial Appeal, operator Boyd Gaming said the decision was a result of market conditions. The resort opened in 1994 as the third casino from Boyd Gaming branded as a Sam’s Town. It’s the largest casino in Tunica. Renovations in 1996 included new convention facilities and 350 new hotel rooms expanding the total to 860.

The company’s statement said: “This was not an easy decision for our company. However, demand throughout the northwest Mississippi market has declined significantly over the past 20 years, with several of Tunica’s original casinos closing since 2014. Our decision to close Sam’s Town is a result of these market conditions, and follows our best efforts to adjust the business to address lower demand.”

The Mississippi Gaming Commission (MGC) reported that casinos in the state generated $223.6m in adjusted gross gaming revenue in May. That’s a rise of 6.6 per cent year-over-year and up 14.3 per cent from April ($195.5m).
