Portugal to impose online gambling restrictions

Online gambling will be limited or banned in Portugal completely during the country’s lockdown measures after a new bill was passed.

Portugal.- Online gambling will be limited or banned completely in Portugal while the country is in lockdown after a new bill was passed.

The bill demands instant action to curb online gambling, where revenue has increased by 18 per cent since Portugal declared a state of emergency on March 18th.

Online casino revenue has also increased by 24 per cent since the nationwide emergency was declared.

The bill, No. 326, was introduced by members of the environmentalist Partido das Pessoas, dos Animais e da Natureza (PAN), although it does not set out specifics for the restrictions required.

However, the bill has called for ‘partial or total limitations on access to online gambling platforms’ and added that the most vulnerable in society must be protected.

Earlier this year it was announced that the final quarter of 2019 saw online gambling in Portugal rise considerably.
