Peter Knutsson named director of the Swedish gambling regulator
Knutsson will take the helm of the Swedish gambling regulator from acting Director Johan Röhr.
Sweden.- The Swedish government has appointed Peter Knutsson as Director General of the country’s gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen. He will take up the position on August 17.
Knutsson has over 20 years of experience as a manager and leader and has a background as a lawyer, with knowledge of consumer issues and consumer legislation. He most recently worked as Advertising Ombudsman, a position he took up in August 2024. He was previously Head of Unit at the Ministry of Finance and also worked for the European Commission and as an advisor to the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority.
His new appointment will run for 6 years, until August 31, 2032.
Spelinspektionen Chairwoman Madelaine Tunudd said Knutsson’s experience with the Ministry of Finance, consumer affairs, and most recently the Advertising Ombudsman would be “very good” for the gambling regulator.
Acting Director General Johan Röhr said: “I welcome the government’s decision on a new Director General for the Swedish Gambling Authority and will ensure that Peter Knutsson receives a good introduction in my handover as acting Director at the Swedish Gambling Authority”.
Spelinspektionen has reported that Swedish gambling revenue was SEK 28.2bn (€2.6bn) in 2025. That’s a rise of 1.3 per cent compared to 2024.
Commercial online gaming and betting generated revenue of just over SEK 18bn, an increase of3.3 per cent. Meanwhile, turnover for Svenska Spel’s state lotteries and Vegas slot machines decreased by 3.4 per cent to SEK 5.5bn. Land-based commercial gaming, mainly at restaurants, generated SEK 263m, an increase of 9.6 per cent.
