New York bill to ban online sweepstake casinos passes Senate committee
The approval moves the proposal to the Senate floor for discussion.
US.- The New York Senate Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee has given its support to S5935, which would prohibit online sweepstakes casinos in the state. The committee’s approval moves the proposal to the Senate floor.
New York senator Joseph Addabbo introduced the bill. Carrie Woerner, chair of the assembly’s racing, gaming, and wagering committee, has introduced a companion bill that is awaiting further action. The bill would explicitly prohibit online sweepstakes casinos from operating in the state. It proposes fines for operators or affiliates who offer or accept revenue from prohibited games.

The bill sets penalties of a minimum of $10,000 to a maximum of $100,000 for an operator or affiliate offering a sweepstakes casino game in the state, or accepting revenue from a sweepstakes casino company. If the bill is approved, the New York State Gaming Commission or New York State Attorney General would be required to uphold the law.
In Florida, representative Walter Barnaby and senator Corey Simon have filed HB953 and S1404, which also seek to criminalise sweepstakes gaming operations, making them third-degree felonies. The proposed legislation does not affect the Seminole Tribe’s existing sports betting compact, which grants it exclusive control over in-person and online sports wagering in Florida.
