New Jersey sports betting handle hits $1.23bn in December

The betting volume was up 23.4 per cent when compared to the $996.3m generated in December 2020.

US.- New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement has reported that online and retail sportsbooks processed $1.23bn in wagers in December 2021. That makes December the fourth straight month the state saw more than $1bn in bets.

Total revenue was slightly below October’s record of $1.3bn, but online casino surpassed revenue records at $133m.

Betting volume was up 24 per cent from December 2020, and sports betting grossed $59m, down 11 per cent when compared to December 2020. Gross revenue generated $8.9m in state and local taxes.

However, according to PlayNJ, New Jersey’s numbers could be hurt by the launch of mobile sports betting in New York earlier this month.

For the full year, retail and online sports betting in New Jersey generated $10.9bn in wagers, the most of any US state in 2021. The figure was up 82 per cent year-on-year.

New Jersey’s retail and online sportsbooks generated $122m in state and local taxes, up 104.7 per cent when compared to last year, and $815.8m in gross revenue, up 104.7 per cent from 2020.
