Nebraska gambling initiatives won’t make November ballot

A Nebraska state official has announced that three gambling initiatives will not be placed on November’s ballot.

US.- Nebraska’s Secretary of State Bob Evnen has announced that three initiatives on gambling legislation will not be added to November’s ballot.

According to Evnen, the initiatives have been blocked from the ballot because the language was misleading and confusing.

He said: “The constitutional right to bring forward initiative petitions for a vote of the people is fundamental to our state governance and is to be zealously protected.

“Part of the protection of the right of initiative is to assure that such petitions are neither misleading nor manipulative.”

The proposed initiatives included a constitutional amendment to legalise gambling at racetracks, and two proposed laws to regulate taxation on the industry, which would channel some of the revenue into state property tax credit.

Evnen said there was also a provision allowing for wagering to take place on tribal lands.

A citizen-driven petition took place last month and, according to supporters, gathered enough signatures to propose the initiatives to voters.

Those sponsoring the petition were named by Evnen’s office as: Keep the Money in Nebraska Inc., the Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association, Ho-Chunk Inc., and Omaha Exposition & Racing.
