MGM pushes sports betting in Massachusetts

MGM Springfield would benefit from sports betting legalisation in Massachusetts and the company is lobbying to get it soon.

US.- As the industry continues to advance in the US, many companies want to take a bite of the market. That’s why MGM is pushing for sports betting in Massachusetts, which would benefit its Springfield venue.

The company expects 2020 to be a successful year, boosted by the segment… should it pass.

Stagnant gambling revenue has MGM president Chris Kelley concerned, which is why sports betting in Massachusetts would really help it.

Chris Kelley’s appointment

MGM Resorts announced late in January that President & COO of MGM Northfield Park in Ohio, Chris Kelley, would replace Michael Mathis as MGM Springfield president. The move comes the month after the facility registered its lowest revenue ever.

Mathis was named president and COO of MGM Springfield back in 2014. It was just before receiving the licence approval from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. He was a pivotal part of MGM’s negotiations with several towns and cities.

He left after the results issued by the local commission. It showed that MGM Springfield brought in US$18.9 million from slots and table games in December.

“His leadership was instrumental in the successful opening of the property. Also the great relationships we have built with the Springfield community and our partners in New England,” said Jorge Perez, regional portfolio president of MGM Resorts International.
