Massachusetts casinos generate $95.78m in July revenue
The state’s casino and sports betting sectors have generated more than $2.99bn in combined tax collections since gaming and wagering operations began.
U.S.- Massachusetts’ three licensed casinos generated approximately $95.78m in gross gaming revenue in July, according to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Licensed mobile and retail sportsbooks generated approximately $65.56m in taxable sports wagering revenue in July.
Since casinos first opened in Massachusetts, the state has collected approximately $2.5bn in taxes and assessments from casino operations. Sports betting has generated another $490.96m in tax collections since retail wagering launched in January 2023 and online betting followed in March.
Plainridge Park Casino is taxed at 49 per cent of gross gaming revenue, with 82 per cent of those proceeds allocated to Local Aid and 18 per cent to the Race Horse Development Fund. MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor, classified as Category 1 resort-casinos, are taxed at 25 per cent.
Retail sportsbooks at the three casinos are taxed at 15 per cent of taxable revenue, while the state’s seven mobile operators face a 20 per cent tax rate.
Sports betting tax revenue is distributed among five state funds, with 45 per cent going to the General Fund, 27.5 per cent to Gaming Local Aid, 17.5 per cent to the Workforce Investment Trust Fund, 9 per cent to the Public Health Trust Fund and 1 per cent to the Youth Development and Achievement Fund.
