Maryland casinos struggle with revenue losses

Maryland casinos reopened 10 days ago but are struggling with the impact of three-months of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

US.- Maryland casinos are struggling with losses in revenue caused by the pandemic.

Despite having reopened last week, the three-month shutdown has severely impacted finances in the sector.

According to the Maryland Lottery & Gaming regulatory agency, revenues in June were only US$34.9 million, compared to US$142.9 million in June 2010.

The state gained only US$14.6 million from June’s gaming revenues.

All venues had to close operations in mid-March. Three smaller casinos – Ocean Downs, Hollywood Perryville and Rocky Gap – resumed activity first when some restrictions were lifted in mid-June. The largest casinos – MGM’s National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel and Horseshoe Baltimore – only opened at the end of June, and can only operate at 50 per cent capacity.

Live! Casino saw the highest revenue in the period with US$15.85 million. National Harbor took US$8 million and Hollywood Perryville US$3.45 million. The other casinos all fell below the US$3million mark.
