Louisiana voters to decide on DFS legalisation
The Senate approved a bill to send DFS legalisation to the state electorate in a vote scheduled for November 6.
US.- Daily fantasy sports (DFS) legalisation lies in the hands of the Louisiana state’s electorate after the Senate approved a bill to send the matter to a vote scheduled for November 6th. The chamber voted 21-15 in favour of House Bill 484 and opened the door to the arrival of the thriving segment in the upcoming years.
HB484 would regulate games and offerings like FanDuel’s and DraftKings’ but it may take some time before they actually arrive in the state. Despite the vote being scheduled for the end of this year, it is expected that (should it pass) additional legislation would be needed to get it going and that could take up to two years.
Rep. Kirk Talbot, HB484’s author, highlighted the potential of DFS to increase state tax revenue. Nonetheless, the bill isn’t very specific on how taxes would be imposed on the segment’s operators, which may lead to more legislation being needed. Therefore, even if the electorate decides they want DFS in the state, Louisiana would have to wait until the next legislative session to have it regulated.
