Law Commission of India, against sports betting
The body had issued a recommendation to regulate the segment but then published a clarification, backing out from its original statement.
India.- Sports betting seems to be the hot topic all around the globe these days as the FIFA World Cup is being played in Russia. In said context, the Law Commission of India had issued a recommendation to regulate gambling and betting on sports but, surprisingly, the body published a second statement making a clarification and backing out from its previous assertion.
“The Commission hereby clarifies that… it has been strongly and categorically recommended that legalising betting and gambling in the present scenario is not desirable and that a complete ban on unlawful betting and gambling must be ensured,” said the clarification, published by the Ministry of Justice and added: “It has been recommended that effective regulation remains the only viable option to control gambling if it is not possible to enforce a complete ban in order to prevent unlawful activities.”
Several other politicians like Veteran Communist leader Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy or opposition leader Manish Tewari had also pronounced against the segment’s regulation. Both agreed that its legalisation would bring more problems than perks and claimed that there would be a negative social impact should it happen.
Thus, despite the segment continues to break records all around the world, India seems to stand against sports betting legalisation.
