Kentucky House approves bill to raise minimum age for sports betting

House Bill 904 proposes several changes to the state’s gambling framework, including raising the minimum age for sports betting.

US.- The Kentucky House has approved House Bill 904, which proposes several changes to the state’s gambling framework. The initiative would raise the minimum age for sports betting and ban prop bets related to college athletes.

The bill passed the House with a vote of 79-15 and now heads to the Senate. Currently, the minimum age for betting in Kentucky is 18. If the bill passes, the state would join most of the others in the US in requiring bettors to be at least 21.

The bill would also ban prop bets involving athletes playing for the state colleges and universities. It would legalise fantasy sports wagering, which would be regulated under the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation. Fantasy contests would be subject to the same age limit.

Speaking on the House floor, Michael Meredith, one of the bill’s sponsor, said the ban on prop betting on in-state collegiate athletes who play for Kentucky teams is intended to remove any incentive for bribery or harassing a player for not meeting a goal.
