Ireland in need of a new gambling law

According to TD O Sullivan, the current laws are outdated and do not consider modern-day gambling.

Ireland.- Dublin Central TD Maureen O Sullivan said that even though the country has had gambling laws and anti-betting legislation and regulations for more than 80 years, they’re outdated and they don’t “take account of modern-day gambling.”

According to the Irish Examiner, O Sullivan said that the current laws cannot assure gambling facilities such as casinos, slot machine halls and private members clubs, and also online sites, that the activity is crime-free. O Sullivan believes that the Government needs to take immediate measures to stop and correct this. “There is no ensuring gambling is provided crime-free,” she reassured.

Besides warning that gambling leads to bankruptcy, personal problems such as depression and family issues, the Dublin Central TD said that 30 to 35 percent of players are problem gamblers and that approximately US$5.5 million is being lost to betting every year, a number that rises concerns among the politician.

O Sullivan said that even though Ireland has been considering new gambling laws, it needs fresh regulations as soon as possible, and that illegal activity in the market concerning criminal gangs and money laundering must me stopped. Frances Fitzgerald, Tánaiste and Justice Minister, said that these subjects are important and that she understands that they need to change the current situation.
