Tennessee governor signs sweepstakes casino ban into law

Senate Bill 2136 had passed the legislature earlier this year before being sent to Governor Bill Lee’s desk.

US.- Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has signed Senate Bill 2136 into law, banning online sweepstakes casinos state-wide. The proposal, sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley, passed the legislature earlier this year before being sent to the governor’s desk.

The proposal bans dual-currency gaming, in which operators offer two forms of virtual currency, one that can be purchased and the other awarded free alongside purchases or through promotions The ban applies to slot simulations, video poker, table games, bingo and sports wagering.

In December, Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti sent cease-and-desist letters to almost forty online sweepstakes casinos operating in the state. Meanwhile, online sweepstakes casinos are to be banned in Oklahoma after the Legislature overrode Governor Kevin Stitt’s veto of Senate Bill 1589, which passed both chambers earlier this year. In Maine, Governor Janet Mills has signed a bill banning online sweepstakes games.
