Harness track licence delayed in Kentucky

The state Racing Commission voted to postpone the awarding of a licence for a harness track and casino in Oak Grove.

US.- A new harness track and casino continues to be discussed by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission but it will still have to wait. The regulator voted to postpone awarding the licence to one of three suitors that plan to open the venue in Oak Grove.

Commissioners approved the delay, despite some of them wanting to decide on Tuesday, and are expected to make a final decision in a new meeting set to take place in the next 30 days. The commission already had a month to review applications but has decided to further assess the proposals and, most likely, decide before Thanksgiving.

Proposals were submitted by Kentucky Downs, a Churchill Downs and Keeneland joint venture and Caesars Entertainment. The projects are expected to cost between US$230 million (Kentucky Downs) and US$1.7 billion (Caesars) but the winner won’t be announced yet.

KHRC chairman Frank Kling expected to gather the same information from all companies and hear the public’s opinion on Tuesday in order to decide. However, it seems the meeting’s results weren’t as the commissioners expected as it’ll take longer than expected to know who will develop the new Kentucky venue.
