Freehold hopes for online sportsbook within month

Tracks have been offering sports betting since 2018 but are counting on expansion into the online market against the context of the pandemic.

US.- Freehold Raceway is hoping to begin offering online sports betting in New Jersey within the next month. It is currently still waiting for its three internet platforms to be approved by the state’s regulator.

Freehold is one of three racetracks in New Jersey that offers in-person sports betting, but hopes to expand into the online market soon, particularly in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic since 80 per cent of wagers in the state are now made online.

Tracks and casinos in New Jersey have been offering sports betting since 2018 following the Supreme Court decision to allow all states in the US to offer sports betting.

Tom Fries, Freehold’s sportsbook manager said in-person sports betting is steadily recovery despite very little advertising.

He said: “We’re going to need to raise awareness in the area, to let people know Freehold is open for sports betting, especially since we were late to the party.”

Matt Cullen from Parx casino, which runs the retail sportsbook at Freehold, added: “It’s growing every day, and it’s in a great area. We’re really excited about it.”
