Dutch gambling regulator appoints new Objections Advisory Committee chair
Jaap Wieland joins to existing chairs on the review body.
The Netherlands.- The Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has named Jaap Wieland as a new independent chair of its Objections Advisory Committee for a period of three years. He becomes the third person to share the role, joining the existing chairs Adriane Koppe and Monique van Oers.
Wieland is a lawyer specialising in general and economic administrative law, which the KSA says makes him a valuable addition to the other two chairs. He was previously a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Law and a lawyer at the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State.
The committee is designed to serve as an impartial body to review any objections that gambling licencees lodge against the KSA’s enforcement action. It evaluates appeals and makes recommendations to the decision-making body.
Koppe and van Oers were both appointed in 2023. Koppe was a lecturer on constitutional and administrative law at the Hague University of Applied Sciences, while van Oers was director of legal Affairs at the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets.
In April, the KSA issued a record fine of €734,000 against an unnamed Dutch gambling licensee because the company failed to adequately protect young adults against excessive gambling and addiction. Since then, it has issued several warnings, including against Unibet operator Optdeck for untargeted advertising and autoplay.
The regulator has been largely positive in its assessment of how operators and clubs have adapted to the introduction of a ban on gambling sponsorship at the start of July.
