Delhi urges to regulate gambling
The Delhi Centre told the High Court that the government has to legislate on the gambling industry to regulate its operation in the Capital.
India.- Delhi needs to regulate gambling, or so the Centre has told the High Court. According to them, the industry is a State subject and the city government has to legislate it to regulate it.
The Centre made such a request during the hearing of a plea that pushes to end betting websites. There are operations that allow gamblers to bet and play games of chance, like poker, online. That’s why it urged the High Court to make the Delhi government a party to the case.
The Court favoured iGaming
Online gambling in Delhi will remain active for now as a division bench of the High Court favoured it. They declined to issue an order for an interim block of online gambling, filed by social activist Avinash Mehrotra.
“No interim relief. Let it go on,” the High Court stated on online gambling. Advocates Prashant Kumar, Siddhartha Iyer, Saurabh Suman Sinha, Awantika Manohar and M/s AP&J Chambers unsuccessfully pressed for the block.
Still, the court issued notice to the centre and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Mehrotra’s filing had alleged that illegal gambling portals are soliciting bets from India in violation of foreign exchange laws, tax laws and existing gambling legislation, Glaws reported.
