Danish gambling revenue up 3.5% in 2021
Growth in online casino drove non-lottery gambling revenue up to DKK6.2bn (€833.4m) in 2021.
Denmark.- Non-lottery gambling revenue in Denmark grew by 3.5 per cent to DKK6.2bn (€833.4m) in 2021 despite a drop in land-based casino revenue.
The biggest growth was in online casino, where revenue rose 16.7 per cent year-on-year from DKK2.4bn in 2020 to DKK2.8bn.
Sports betting revenue also rose, up by 5.2 per cent to DKK2.4bn. Revenue was lower in 2020 due to the cancellation of sporting events because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, revenue from slot machines fell by 22.4 per cent. This was partly the result of many slot halls operating at 50 per cent capacity, only using every other machine.
Land-based casino revenue fell 6.9 per cent to DKK236m, with no revenue at all for the first five months due to casino closures as the result of the pandemic.
Numbers improved significantly after casinos reopened, with October seeing land-based casino revenue of DKK38m, the highest monthly total in a decade.
However, Danish casinos were forced to close again last month as a result of a new rise in Covid-19 cases.
