Daniele Correa Cardoso named as new head of Brazil’s gambling regulator
Correa Cardoso replaces Régis Dudenna as the helm of the Ministry of Finance’s Secretariat of Prizes and Betting.
Brazil.- Daniele Correa Cardoso has been named as the new head of Brazil’s gambling regulator, the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) at the Ministry of Finance. Currently deputy secretary of the organisation, she will step up to replace by Régis Dudenna, who leaves to become Secretary of Economic Reforms.
The change in leadership comes just over two years after the SPA was created in January 2024 and a year after the launch of regulated online gambling in Brazil. The transition is intended to guarantee continuity in both technical and policy aspects.
Daniele was previously the regulator’s general coordinator of responsible gambling. She said she will follow the established regulatory agenda.
She said: “The SPA’s priorities remain focused on consumer protection and the popular economy. We have a regulatory agenda for 2025 and 2026, and another for 2026 and 2027, including public consultation. The priority is the continuation of our work in combating the illegal market, monitoring, inspection, prevention of fraud and money laundering and Promoting responsible play”.
Currently, 70 companies with 79 brands are authorised to legally operate in the Brazilian betting market, according to the list available on the official website of the secretariat. Gambling revenue in Brazil reached €5.96bn in first year of regulated market.
The SPA has been focusing on combating illegal operations. With the Ministry of Justice and the National Telecommunication Agency (Anatel), it says it has removed more than 25,000 illegal gambling sites.
Meanwhile, the government is expected to present a new a decree that would increase the requirements for age verification for gambling in Brazil.
