California bill to ban sweepstakes gaming heads to Senate floor
The State Senate’s Appropriations Committee gave its approval to the bill.
US.- A California bill that proposes a ban on online sweepstakes gaming has been advanced without commentary by the State Senate’s Appropriations Committee. After a unanimous 7-0 vote, the bill now heads to the Senate floor.
Assembly Bill (AB) 831 would prohibit sweepstakes games that use a dual currency model. It was proposed by assemblymember Avelino Valencia and co-sponsored by the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, the California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA) and the Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations (TASIN).
Those who violate the law could face misdemeanour charges, up to one year in jail, and fines ranging from $1,000 to $25,000.
Montana was the first US state to pass legislation explicitly banning online sweepstakes casinos. The new law will enter into effect on October 1.
