Coronavirus: Melco to donate US$2.6 million

Cash to be used to buy medical supplies and support communities in Wuhan and Hubei.

Macau.- Macau IR operator Melco Resorts & Entertainment will donate HK$20 million (US$2.6 million) as part of efforts to combat the Coronavirus outbreak. The funds will be used to purchase medical supplies and support local communities in Wuhan and Hubei.

In a statement issued by the gambling giant, Melco said it is working with the government to ensure the funds are used to control the spread of the deadly Coronavirus that has already claimed 170 lives.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Wuhan and Hubei, and all those who are impacted by the new strain of the Coronavirus,” Melco Resorts & Entertainment Chairman and CEO, Lawrence Ho, said.

“We hope this donation helps accelerate the preventive measures to contain the spread of the virus. Melco fully supports the government’s initiatives to contribute to the health and wellbeing of those affected in the community,” he added.

On Tuesday, Melco Resorts & Entertainment announced that it had closed its UA Galaxy Cinemas, Macau Tower Cinema, Cinemateca Paixão, Cineteatro Macau Cinema and Cinema Alegria.

“The health and safety of our guests and colleagues is always our top priority,” Ho said at the time.
